LoL Custom Skins: Can You Get Banned for Using It?

League of Legends is one of the most popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, with millions of active players. Many players like to customize the look of their favorite champions by using custom skins that change the champions’ appearances and effects in-game. However, there has been some debate within the LoL community about whether using these unofficial custom skins could get a player banned.

We’ll take a close look at LoL’s rules regarding custom skins and examine whether players really risk account bans or other punishments for using skins not officially created by Riot Games.

What Are League of Legends Custom Skins?

Custom skins in League of Legends refer to modified textures and models that change the appearance of a champion but don’t affect gameplay. These player-created skins allow Summoners to equip their champions with looks unavailable in the game’s official store. Custom skins can give champions whole new outfits, tweak their abilities’ visual effects, or simply offer a recolor of their default appearances.

They add variety and novelty that goes beyond Riot Games’ officially released skins. Custom skins are downloadable files that must be installed through a third-party tool to modify a champion’s in-game model and textures. They allow players to personalize their mains and stand out from default or shop-bought skins.

Can You Get Banned for Using LoL Custom Skins?

Yes, you can. There has been a lot of debate within the community about whether League of Legends custom skins could get a player banned, and plenty of players say they’ve used them for years without a punishment. That only tells you what happened to those accounts. It isn’t permission from Riot, and we found no Riot statement saying custom skins are allowed.

However, Riot does address them directly. Its Third Party Applications page says it reserves the right to act against applications that let you use its assets for free, which it calls “skin hacks”. The same page warns that an unauthorized app may cost you your account, and that suspensions can reach permanent bans. Riot’s Terms of Service also prohibit unauthorized third-party programs, including mods. Neither page exempts cosmetic-only skins.

Riot Vanguard changes the picture too. Riot’s anti-cheat went live in League with patch 14.9 on May 1, 2024. It runs whenever League is open and can block programs from loading on your PC. Riot’s Vanguard FAQ doesn’t mention custom skins, so nothing there clears them. Riot also announced that from October 6, 2026 it would block game memory access by default for unknown third-party apps. That notice lists mods among past uses of that access but doesn’t name skin tools. Riot says the block doesn’t result in bans by itself, but a tool that relies on that access can stop working.

Ultimately, treat older advice with care. A 2012 PC Gamer report quoted Riot saying it didn’t actively enforce against custom skins, but that was 12 years before Vanguard, and Riot’s current pages are much stricter. Riot’s own guidance is simple: if you’re worried an app might break the rules, don’t use it. Staying cosmetic-only doesn’t change that.

Conclusion

To sum up, yes, you can get banned for using League of Legends custom skins, even if they stay purely cosmetic. Riot calls these tools skin hacks, reserves the right to act against them, and prohibits unauthorized mods in its Terms of Service. With Vanguard live, nobody can promise you that a skin tool is safe.

As always, players should use common sense. We couldn’t find any figures from Riot on how often it punishes custom skin users, so other players’ experiences can’t tell you what will happen to your account. If you don’t want to put your account at risk, stick to skins from the official store.
