When Did Clash Royale Come Out? A Decade of Supercell

Clash Royale came out worldwide on March 2, 2016, on iOS and Android. The game soft-launched two months earlier, on January 4, 2016, in nine countries.

Last updated: April 14, 2026 , current patch is the April 7, 2026 balance update.

I still have the App Store receipt from March 3, 2016. Opened the game at lunch, hit Arena 3 by the time I went home, and never really stopped queueing. A decade later, I’m a 8,100-trophy Gold 2 player who just watched Hero Magic Archer get gutted in the April balance patch. So when people ask me when Clash Royale came out, I don’t need Wikipedia. But the full story is more interesting than one date.

When did Clash Royale come out worldwide?

Clash Royale launched globally on March 2, 2016, on both iOS and Android, after a soft launch that started January 4, 2016, in nine countries including Canada and Australia. Supercell developed the game from 2014 onward under the codename Wizard Arena before folding it into the Clash universe.

That global launch day was massive. Per Wikipedia’s Clash Royale article, the game became the most downloaded AND top-grossing app on the U.S. iOS App Store on release day. Supercell pulled over $1 billion in revenue in the first 12 months alone. A mobile game. Twelve months.

Clash Royale soft-launch map January 2016

What was the Clash Royale soft launch like?

The iOS soft launch dropped on January 4, 2016, in Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and New Zealand. Android joined on February 16, 2016, in the same regions. TouchArcade’s coverage from January 4, 2016 called it a “card-battling take on Clash of Clans,” which honestly undersold it.

Here’s the thing most people don’t know. Development started back in 2014, and the prototype went through a weird identity crisis. Per Wikipedia, it began as “a prototype called The Summoners that had been abandoned prior to” Clash of Clans’ release. Supercell then rebuilt it as Wizard Arena with an original fantasy setting. Only later did they decide to plant it inside the Clash of Clans universe so the King, the Barbarians, and the Hog Rider would feel familiar on day one.

Smart move. Probably saved them a year of brand-building.

The soft-launch trophy meta (yes, I was there)

I wasn’t in one of the launch countries, but my cousin in Sydney was, and I remember him sending screenshots of his Hog Rider + Freeze deck wrecking people. Freeze used to be 4 elixir and it was genuinely busted. The card has been nerfed, reworked, and buffed roughly a dozen times since. (I’d link the exact patch note list but the Fandom Version History page is blocking me right now , annoying.)

How has Clash Royale changed since the launch year?

A lot. Too much for some players, not enough for others. Here’s the short version of the big feature drops.

Year Feature What changed
March 2, 2016 Global launch 54 cards, 8 arenas
July 2019 Pass Royale Monthly seasons + battle pass
October 2021 Champions New rarity tier with activatable abilities
June 2023 Card Evolutions Cards get upgraded forms after 2 cycles
October 22, 2023 PC launch Google Play Games beta brought CR to desktop
April 2025 Chest timers removed Progression shifted to gacha-style pulls
December 2025 Heroes New Hero card slot, unique abilities

Clash Royale 10-year feature timeline 2016 to 2026

The Heroes drop in December 2025 was the spiciest change in years. When Hero Knight launched with a taunt lasting 0.7 seconds, tournaments got dominated fast. The April 26, 2026 balance update cut that taunt to 0.1 seconds , basically a functional rework. Hero Magic Archer’s ability cost also jumped from 1 elixir to 2. Brutal if you’d cycle-ranked with him.

The 10th-anniversary milestone pushed lifetime revenue to roughly $4.9 billion, per Sensor Tower figures cited on Wikipedia. For a vertical-screen mobile game from 2016, that’s absurd staying power. Fortnite is the only other live-service game I can think of that’s had a decade this clean.

Is Clash Royale worth playing in 2026?

Depends who’s asking. New player? Yes, but be warned — the card ceiling is steeper than ever. Between Evolutions, Champions, Towers, and now Heroes, you need something like 109 cards at sufficient levels to be competitive in Path of Legends. That’s why I’ve seen friends buy a stacked CR account instead of grinding from fresh. Hardstuck Silver on a level-8 King is miserable.

Returning player from 2018? Honestly, it’s almost a different game. The chest timer removal in April 2025 was the biggest progression shake-up since seasons launched, and I think Supercell will keep leaning into gacha over deterministic grind. (You might hate it. I mildly hate it. But the numbers say it works.)

April 7 2026 balance patch Wall Breakers Evolution nerf

Current patch take: the Wall Breakers Evolution nerf (area damage 258 → 192, a 26% cut per the patch notes) kills Miner Wall Breakers ladder decks below 8k. If you main that deck, swap now. Skeleton Dragons got an 88% splash radius buff, which I’ve already seen pop up in two Ultimate Champion ladder replays on RoyaleAPI’s blog.

My prediction? Supercell nerfs Skeleton Dragons again within two balance cycles. They always overcorrect buffs.

Clash Royale came out March 2, 2016, globally, January 4, 2016, as a soft launch — and ten years later it’s still one of the top-grossing mobile games on the planet. My honest opinion: the 2026 version is deeper and more fun than 2016’s, but the learning curve is brutal without a maxed collection. If grinding from scratch sounds rough, you can always buy a Clash Royale account and jump straight into the Hero meta.
