Lethality in League of Legends Explained (2026)

League of Legends lethality is the stat that lets assassins delete squishies before they can flash. If you’ve ever watched a Zed combo erase an ADC in 0.4 seconds and wondered what’s powering that, this is the full breakdown of the lol lethality formula, every item worth buying, and when to stop stacking it.

Last updated: April 14, 2026, patch 26.7

How Does Lethality Work in League of Legends?

Lethality grants flat armor penetration on a 1:1 basis at all levels. When you deal physical damage, the game subtracts your total lethality from the target’s armor before calculating damage. A target with 40 armor hit by a champion with 18 lethality takes damage as if they only had 22 armor, which bumps your effective physical damage from 71% to about 82%.

That might sound small on paper. It’s not. The difference between 71% and 82% damage output on every auto, every ability, every proc adds up to hundreds of extra damage per fight. And it compounds: stack two lethality items and a squishy carry’s 50 armor basically becomes 14.

The armor penetration wiki page on the official LoL site spells out the core damage formula: Damage Multiplier = 100 / (100 + Armor). Lethality just makes that armor number smaller.

Before patch 14.1, lethality scaled with level. You’d buy Serrated Dirk and only get a fraction of its value early. Riot scrapped that system entirely. Now 10 lethality is 10 flat armor pen whether you’re level 3 or level 18. This made early Dirk rushes way more punishing than they used to be (and honestly, I think that’s part of why assassin mids feel so oppressive right now).

Every Lethality Item Ranked for Patch 26.7

Here’s the full list of lethality items currently on Summoner’s Rift, pulled from the League of Legends Wiki:

Item Lethality Cost Best For
Bastionbreaker 22 3,200g Split-pushing assassins, objective threats
Youmuu’s Ghostblade 18 2,700g Roamers, map control
Opportunity 18 2,700g Burst-first assassins
Axiom Arc 18 2,750g Ult-dependent champs (Zed, Nocturne)
Hubris 18 2,800g Snowball games, ego purchases
Profane Hydra 18 2,850g Waveclear + lethality combo
Umbral Glaive 18 2,800g Vision denial, support assassins
Edge of Night 15 3,000g Spell-shield safety
Serpent’s Fang 15 2,500g Shield-heavy enemy comps
Spectral Cutlass 15 2,800g Divers who need a way out
The Collector 10 3,000g Execute threshold + crit builds
Serrated Dirk 10 1,000g First-back component

Bastionbreaker is the 2026 addition. It’s the highest-lethality item in the game at 22, and its Shaped Charge passive deals bonus true damage scaling off your total lethality. The Sabotage effect after takedowns lets you chunk turrets and epic monsters. I’ve been running it third on Talon after Youmuu’s and Hubris, and the turret pressure is genuinely disgusting. Took two inhibitor turrets in under 4 seconds during a game last week.

Which Champions Should Build Lethality?

Short answer: AD assassins and some lethality-scaling marksmen.

The classic lethality builders are Zed, Talon, Qiyana, Kha’Zix, Blue Kayn, and Rengar. These champs live or die by their ability to one-shot a carry and get out. Every point of lethality directly translates to kill thresholds, and the difference between having 36 vs 54 total lethality often determines whether the enemy ADC survives with a sliver or doesn’t survive at all.

Then there’s the ADC lethality crew. Jhin has run lethality builds since Season 7. His fourth-shot crits with 50+ lethality are war crimes against squishy supports. I played 8 games of lethality Jhin last patch and averaged 23 kills across the set. It felt illegal. Nocturne and Rengar also fit this mold.

If you’re trying to learn assassin fundamentals and climb ranked, understanding how ranked works in LoL matters just as much as your build path. Mechanics are one thing. Knowing when and where to assassinate is what separates Gold from Diamond.

Lethality vs Percentage Armor Penetration

This is where most players mess up their builds.

Lethality subtracts a flat number from armor. Percentage armor penetration removes a percentage of it. Against a 40-armor mage, 18 lethality removes 18 armor (leaving 22). Against a 200-armor Malphite, that same 18 lethality barely dents him, leaving 182.

Percentage pen like Serylda’s Grudge or Lord Dominik’s Regards would strip 30%+ of that 200 armor, removing 60+ effective armor. Way more impactful against tanky targets.

The rule I follow: stack lethality when the enemy team has 3+ squishies. If they’ve got 2 or more champions building armor items, grab one lethality item for lane then pivot to percentage pen. I think Riot actually wants players to mix both stats more in 2026, and Bastionbreaker’s true damage scaling hints at that direction. But pure lethality stacking still dominates solo queue below Masters because games end before tanks finish their second armor item.

How to Build Lethality Efficiently

First back: buy Serrated Dirk if you have 1,000 gold. Always. It’s the single biggest powerspike component in the game for AD assassins and its 10 lethality at first back is often the difference between killing your laner at level 6 or watching them walk away with 40 HP.

After that, your choice depends on playstyle:

  • Roaming? Youmuu’s Ghostblade first. The 40 bonus movement speed out of combat plus the Wraith Step active (25% move speed for 6 seconds) makes your roam timer absurd.
  • Already fed? Hubris. Its Eminence passive grants bonus AD on takedowns, so a 3/0 Zed with Hubris becomes a genuine 1v9 threat.
  • Need burst, not roams? Opportunity’s Preparation passive stacks up to 10 bonus lethality after staying out of champion combat for 8 seconds. Walk into a bush, wait, then one-shot.

Three lethality items is usually the sweet spot. After that, you’re stacking diminishing returns against anyone who bought a Chain Vest. Pick up a Serylda’s Grudge or Black Cleaver fourth, then round out with a defensive option or more raw AD.

If you’re practicing builds on an alt account, grabbing a fresh LoL smurf account lets you test full lethality without tanking your main’s MMR.

Common Lethality Mistakes

Stacking 5 lethality items against tanks. I’ve seen it in every elo. Your Talon has 80 lethality and can’t kill the 3-item Leona. That’s not a champion diff. That’s a build diff.

Ignoring Serpent’s Fang into shields. Lulu, Janna, Karma, Shieldbow carries. If the enemy has 2+ shield sources, Serpent’s Fang at 2,500 gold is the cheapest and most efficient counter. People skip it because it “only” has 15 lethality. The shield reduction passive is worth more than 3 extra lethality points.

Building The Collector when you’re behind. The execute threshold only matters if you’re already dealing enough damage to get them low. At 10 lethality, it offers less flat pen than any other completed item. Buy it when snowballing. Not when you’re 0/4.

If your build path and game knowledge are solid but you can’t break out of your current rank, LoL rank boosting exists for a reason. Sometimes you need a reset to play at the elo your mechanics deserve.

FAQ

Is lethality the same as armor penetration in LoL?

Lethality is specifically flat armor penetration. Since patch 14.1, 1 point of lethality equals exactly 1 point of flat armor penetration at all levels. Percentage armor penetration is a separate stat found on items like Serylda’s Grudge and Lord Dominik’s Regards.

Does lethality scale with level in 2026?

No. Riot removed level scaling for lethality back in patch 14.1. You get the full value of your lethality stat at every point in the game, which makes early lethality buys much stronger than they used to be.

Can lethality reduce armor below zero?

It can’t. If a target has 20 armor and you have 35 lethality, the game treats their armor as 0, not negative 15. You won’t deal bonus damage beyond the 0-armor threshold with lethality alone.

What is the best first lethality item in LoL?

Youmuu’s Ghostblade and Hubris are the two most popular first completions. Youmuu’s gives roaming power with out-of-combat movement speed, while Hubris snowballs harder if you’re already picking up kills. Serrated Dirk at 1,000 gold is the universal first-back component regardless of which completed item you’re building toward.

Should I build lethality against tanks?

No. Lethality shreds a flat amount of armor, so it falls off hard against targets stacking 150+ armor. Against tanky comps, swap to percentage armor penetration items like Serylda’s Grudge or Black Cleaver after your first lethality item. Pure lethality only works when the enemy team is mostly squishy.

Lethality is still the strongest stat for AD assassins in Season 2026, and the addition of Bastionbreaker only made it more relevant. Learn the formula, build it right, and stop stacking five Dirk items into a Malphite. Your LP will thank you.
